A thread on halloweenforum.com was started a few months ago, asking everyone what their favorite haunted attractions were. In this blog post, I will cover the first item on my list (which was in no particular order):
Headless Horseman in Ulster Park, NY.
It's a bit of a drive to get out there, but the rural scenery is so gorgeous that you won't mind. Take the opportunity to do some leaf-peeping.
I've been there twice, in 2016 and in 2018. The second time wasn't really that different than the first, which I feel is a bit unfortunate considering that the admission price is a bit high. Still, it's so incredible that it's hardly much of a disappointment.
Animatronic Headless Horseman
In general, HH is a seriously impressive, expansive, detailed, fantastic haunt with great actors. Some spots have lonnnnnng wait times, even with the timed ticket, so our Halloween squad has gone during the first weekend it's open. Be sure to wear some comfortable walking shoes.
Your experience begins with a hayride, which itself is great. From there, you're dropped off at the next station, which is the beginning of a series of haunted houses, which are walkthrough experiences, some inside and some outside.
After your journey, you end up back near where you entered, and there are several snack bars and some great gift shops. One has your typical official t-shirts and merch related to the haunt, and two of them have more decorative fare, including many primitive-style/rustic stuff.
There are also plenty of photo-op areas, which is especially great since photo-taking is prohibited on the hayride & in the haunted houses. Exploring those areas are a great way to end an exciting night out; they're mostly uncrowded and quiet, where you can really take some time to enjoy a spooky rural October evening.
So many beautiful jack o'lanterns!

All in all, I highly recommend this attraction. This year, they will be open, while following special protocols - for example, the hayride has been replaced with a drive-thru experience. If you decide to go, I suggest reading through their rules & regulations to be prepared & to have the best time possible. And, ABSOLUTELY get a timed ticket, & go as early in the season as you can.
