The smell of rain

If you're here, you might be wondering what petrichor means, anyway - or what it has to do with Halloween.

Petrichor is a scent: the smell of rain as it begins to hit the ground after a long, hot spell. It's so distinct that you can often smell rain coming before it reaches you. It's earthy, dark, and deep; the small of hot pavement, soil, and dust; the smell of thunderstorms approaching.

I associate the scent of petrichor with a nostalgic feeling of anticipation: The excitement of enjoying long nights of summer vacation, heralding the coming of Autumn and Halloween.

You can read about some of the science behind the scent here:

Moon moth

Spotted this little friend moon-gazing last evening.

WE ARE CHAOS

New Marilyn Manson video just hit -

I dig this one. I've been a fan of his work since the early 90s and I'm glad he's still putting out good shit. Looking forward to the rest of the album, which comes out on the 11th Sept. this year. He's still got it.

Cute little devil

Watermelon jacko!

Summerween continues, and I finally got around to carving a watermelon jacko!

I've been meaning to for years, but we almost never buy whole watermelons unless there's a party. This personal size one was the perfect size. Last night, I finally did it.

Once I scooped him out, he was super easy to carve with a regular serrated knife.

As you can see, I had lots of fun taking pics of him. I submitted him to The Great Pumpkin Project Instagram so hopefully I'll get a feature on there. (If you haven't checked them out, please do so, they're doing great work for Halloween lovers! @greatpumpkinproject)

10/10 would absolutely recommend this activity.🎃🍉

Pumpkin spice for breakfast

Truth Seekers - new horror series

A new Simon Pegg & Nick Frost joint? This one looks fun!

Almost makes me wish I still had Amazon Prime... almost.

Within the Realm of a Dying Sun

Within the Realm of a Dying Sun, the third studio album by Dead Can Dance, released this day in 1987.

I cannot adequately express how much their haunting, ethereal music has meant to me over the past decades.

Scents of the season

Pumpkin Spice season is upon us! It's officially the beginning of the dark half of the year when these start showing up.

Pic from my archives, from 2018 or thereabouts.

He who walks between the rows...

"I spy with my little eye...something that starts with C."

I had to.

I saw 'em, and I had to have 'em.

My name is Neb, and I am a jack o'lantern-holic.

Currently watching

I am a fan of American Horror Story, but hadn't seen anything after the Roanoke season.
I haven't seen season 7 (Cult) or 8 (Apocalypse) yet because lately, real life seems a bit scarier than fiction in certain subject matters.

So I decided to skip ahead and watch the most recent season, Camp, which I think just recently came to Hulu.

I'm only a couple episodes in so far, but it's entertaining enough in a cheesy 80s movie kind of way, which I assume is intentional. It almost doesn't feel like a season of AHS, since I only recognize one of the actors from any of the previous seasons. The cast seems like a fun mix tho, and I think the summer camp horror thing is just what I'm needing right now.

Target 2020 Halloween preview + some of my faves

A few of my favorites from this year's selection of Halloween stuff at Target.
I usually don't look at Halloween pre-sales, because I'd rather wait to be surprised as I discover stuff on my own in person when I go there.

I doubt I'll be going into the shops this year due to the pandemic, so I'll do my Halloween browsing online. It feels a bit disappointing, but it's okay for one year to be different.

Hey, remember when we all felt that rain on Halloween night was a real tragedy that ruined the night? Hahaha. Seems quaint now.

Lovecraft Country, coming soon

I've been hearing hype about Lovecraft Country for some time, and after watching this trailer I am definitely on board -

August 16th is the premiere date. Can't wait!!

Sweet treat

Orange + purple might be my favorite color combination.

Halloweenspotting - memories

I haven't been out to many places since the pandemic, but I know this is the time of year I'd be out there, looking for early signs of the season. This was taken about one year ago, a delightful discovery in the outdoor gardening section of Fred Meyer.

Horse chestnuts of Pumpkin Patches Past.

One from the archives - from a sunny, balmy afternoon in October 2004 with friends at the former site of Elm Knoll Farm in Somers, CT. I have lots of fond memories of that place, it was once THE farm to get pumpkins in our area. Expect more posts about Elm Knoll in the future.

That golden hour.

This summer is a bust, so I am living vicariously through my memories. Last year around this time, I spent a weekend camping with friends in the Chehalis area of Washington state. I could have spent forever basking in those golden fields of late afternoon.

New Halloween Kringle Candles!

I am definitely a hedonist, especially when it comes to the sensory delights of the Halloween season.
Therefore it might go without saying that I LOVE scented candles, and Kringle Candle (the next-gen, superior version of Yankee Candle) has just announced the pre-order of their 2020 Halloween candles.

There are ten scents available, check out the full line on their website.

This is not a paid promotion! I just love their stuff. 🎃

First post.

Around this time every year, the real ones know - Halloween's coming.

Of course, Halloween is a way of life, not just a time of year for many of us, however...

The 4th of July has passed.
Black & orange stuff starts appearing in the craft stores.
It's official - time to start anticipating The High Holiday.

Time for introductions. I'm Nebulosus, aka Neb.
I'm dedicating this blog to the missing Pumpkinrot. I can't possibly fill his shoes, but since he isn't posting for the time being, I'll try to fill that void by sharing my own original Halloween content. I'll likely do guest features too at some point, but for now I'm digging deep into my archives of Halloween and autumn related imagery. I'll also post links to music and other things I love that inspire me.  I aim to publish almost every day. I also have an Instagram which can be found here

I hope you'll join me!
